May 24th 2009 saw the last day of the Premier League in English soccer. It's a huge day in the season, and led me to wonder what would happen if relegation was a feature of the mighty NFL - read on to find out more..!
As much as the NFL would like their sport to be a global passion, the fact of the matter is that it isn't.
Yes it's watched in many places around the world, but attempts to grow the sport outside the US have never really taken hold.
One main reason that I can see is that the sport is a franchise business, with every team being a franchise of the main business.
That's just not the way most sports run. With most sports, anyone can start a team, and progress through the ranks and divisions if they are good enough. This isn't the case with the NFL - there is no promotion to a higher league, and similarly there is no relegation to a lower league.
The Premier League in England is currently considered one of, if not *the* best league in the world, and to drop out of it costs a team maybe $100 million dollars in revenue - it's a huge blow to a team, as they must then play the following season in a far inferior league to try and battle their way back.
They have to spend a minimum of one season out of the top flight, and that's assuming they get back at the first attempt! Many teams have found that the culture shock of being in the lower division leaves them ill prepared for the battle.
The last day of the league is therefore filled with emotion from the fans that is hard to replicate in the NFL.
Big teams go down too, no-one is immune!
Can you imagine if there was relegation in the NFL?
Teams like the Miami Dolphins, the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins would probably all have suffered from relegation. Supposedly big teams, but they have all had years of bad form which would not see them stay in the top division if relegation was an issue.
It's an interesting concept, and one of the reasons why the NFL will never be a global passion.

Indy 500 or Monaco GP?
The Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix are 2 massive events in the car racing world - but which is better, and how can you make money from your view?
Personally I dont think you can split them, they both have different reasons for being great, but both of them are rich in history.

American Idol Great For Online Profits!

Yesterday several MPs made the unprecedented step of criticising him from the floor of the house, and today he becasme the first speaker in 300 years to be forced from office.

Make Money Writing About Eurovision!
The Eurovision Song Contest 2009 was watched live by 100 million people, plus untold others who don't watch but have opinions about it, and certainly about Norway's runaway win.

New Star Trek Movie - Did You Spot Randy Pausch?
May 2009 sees the new Star Trek movie getting rave reviews - I happen to think the most notable performance is a little cameo by Randy Pausch, read on to find out why...
I first came across the name of Randy Pausch via someone who knew I liked the area of goal achievement. Pausch was a professor at the Carnegie Mellon University in the US, who knew he was going to die pretty soon from pancreatic cancer. He gave a lecture called The Last Lecture in 2007, which became and still is a huge success on YouTube.
When you watch it, (and I suggest you go to YouTube and search it out) you'll see why it's so popular.
Pausch gives a humorous account of his dreams and how he went about achieving them. He covers some mental attitude techniques, about how you can defeat yourself, or help yourself via your attitudes, and finishes by saying the lecture is for his children.
He died in 2008, but after the success of his lecture, in which he had joked about wanting to be Captain Kirk as a kid, director JJ Abrams had asked him to film a short cameo to be included in the next film.
Pausch did so, and that cameo is featured in the film - at the beginning Pausch appears as a crewman and says the line 'Captain we have a visual'.
Normally the kind of appearance not worthy of note, but in the context of his lecture and theories of what can happen when you take certain actions, it's dynamite to watch!

This kind of exposure means it can be used to generate online profits - here's what I mean...
As the weekly show airs, the amount of traffic related to the subject increases. It's relatively easy to find keywords to focus on, and what I mean by keywords is the words that people are typing into search engines to get their information.
On the day of the show, the quest for information about how was voted out gets to a stage where those keywords become some of the hottest searches online, full stop!
This is huge information, because it means that we know where there is a load of online traffic, so all we have to do to make profits is to put something in front of that traffic which we can monetize.
This could be as simple as a blog post - it's free to do, and if we set up blog with adverts that make us money, which can be set up for free, and if we use the relevant keywords in our blog post title, it will hoover up a good portion of that traffic, which in turn will lead to profit.

Free Mars Chocolate!
A day after KFC played the media game and gave away free meals, the Mars group is hot on their heels, giving away free chocolate!

Statue of Liberty To Reopen!
It's been announced that the Statue of Liberty will reopen for tourists on Jul 4th 2009.
Probably in response to the economic crisis as anything else, the monument on Ellis Island New York will reopen for guided tours.
Closed since the 9/11 attacks, this will provide a great chance for tourists to get a glimpse and feel of America's history.
