Michael Martin, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has resigned.
Yesterday several MPs made the unprecedented step of criticising him from the floor of the house, and today he becasme the first speaker in 300 years to be forced from office.
He came to epitomize the feeling against MPs, and himself spent a lot of time resisting access to MPs from the Freedm of Information Act.
I think it was inevitable that he had to go.
